Fonts: how to prevent them from being replaced

The fonts you choose for your text define its appearance and style.

Make sure all fonts are properly embedded or converted to outlines within your file.

If the fonts are not embedded, the following may occur:

  • Your file may be blocked by our system, showing an error message

  • The file may still proceed to print, but the final appearance will change: unrecognized fonts will be automatically replaced with a default substitute font

This will cause the appearance of your printed material (image on the right) to differ significantly from your original design (image on the left).

To avoid these types of issues, always ensure that all fonts you use are licensed for embedding and printing. Even when you use common fonts that come preinstalled with the software you've chosen to create your artwork, always make sure that fonts are actually embedded in the final file you save.

You may choose to convert text to outlines, except when ordering Magazines, Books, or Catalogs. In these cases, outlining large amounts of text creates excessive anchor points, which can lead to file complexity issues and system rejection.

Here is how to convert text to outlines in Illustrator:

Before saving your file, convert all text to outlines or ensure that all fonts you use are licensed for embedding and printing.
